The South Carolina Ports Authority wanted to construct a temporary "crane raising" area at the Wando Terminal in Mount Pleasant. The improved area was located just landward of the pile-supported wharf and gave SCPA an area in which to retrofit existing Ship to Shore cranes, one at a time, in order that they would be able to load and unload containers from the larger Post-Panamax ships that call on the port of Charleston. An "off line" location was chosen so that continued operations of the terminal were not interrupted. This project was fast tracked and was completed in 70 days of construction time.
