CSX South Timber Span Replacement Over Cooper River

A Notable Project

Project Description

Cape Romain Contractors was awarded the South Timber Span Replacement Project over the Cooper River for CSX Transportation. This project involved the removal and replacement of a 395LF section of old timber railroad trestle crossing the Cooper River near Cordesville, SC. The project consisted of driving  30, 20-inch prestressed concrete piles, constructing cast-in-place concrete caps beneath the existing track, and installing new precast box beam spans. During span changes, the track was closed for eight-hour windows, allowing for the demolition of old timber spans and the precise installation of new spans, all while coordinating closely with CSX operations to minimize rail traffic disruptions. After the new spans were in place, track crews from CSX placed new ballast and tied the track back together prior to opening to rail traffic. All work was performed from an adjacent construction access trestle. Materials, except for cast-in-place concrete, were delivered via barge from their marine facility in Wando, SC.
