Project Description
The U.S National Park Service awarded the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie Pier replacements to Cape Romain Contractors, Inc. in January 2025 as the general contractor for the project. The project scope includes the demolition and replacement of both existing concrete piers at the NPS historic sites, as well as mooring, handrail, and ferry access upgrades at Liberty Square in downtown Charleston, the ferry terminal for access to Ft. Sumter. The existing piers have met their expected life spans, and remediation work was not an economically viable solution.
Work at Ft. Moultrie included the demolition of the existing concrete pier and top-down construction of a new concrete pier consisting of Pre-cast concrete planks supported by precast concrete piles. These improvements will serve as a new public pier for the general public, as well as access for NPS personnel and law enforcement and water craft for both the Ft. Sumter and Ft. Moultrie sites.
Work at Ft. Sumter includes the construction of a new concrete pier consisting of concrete precast planks supported by precast concrete pile, a new ferry breasting dolphins, and ferry gangway access. Work must be completed while keeping existing pier operations open to the public. Following transfer of operations to the new pier, the existing pier will be removed in full.
Work at liberty square includes pier repairs, handrail upgrades, and a new articulating gangway for access to and from the ferry.
